How long have you been selling on Etsy? How did you become interested in creating your own handmade products?
I started my shop 4 months ago. I was looking to expand my decorating business and wanted to focus on doing quick and affordable room reviews. While I was thinking about how I could do them, a friend kept posting her Etsy listings – that gave me the idea to try it there. I wanted to do more than just the consultations, but I wanted whatever I made to be somewhat related to decor. I had a huge pile of leftover countertop samples, so I decided to start by turning them into notebooks.
What inspires you to create?
Usually I’ll just see a piece of fabric, or paper, or a picture with colours that I love – that gives me an idea and I go from there.
What are some of your favorite colors/patterns/design aesthetics? How do you incorporate them into your work?
Being a decorator, I’m a little obsessed with colour – but I’m partial to rusts, oranges and reds. I try to make sure that there’s some variety in the colours when I make stuff, though, so my whole shop doesn’t look the same. And I love squares – that’s probably why I like making coasters so much!
What is your workroom like? What conditions lead you to create the best work?
My workroom right now is my dining room table. My project this winter is designing a craft room upstairs, so hopefully soon I’ll be able to say I have an actual workroom. So far my plan is to have loads of storage and a nice big work surface for laying out tiles so they aren’t drying all over my house! I think having a nice, bright and quiet workspace will be great when it comes to creating.
How long does it take to design and create each piece?
Making them takes a bit longer, but designing them is fairly quick…with coasters it’s basically finding a paper I like (although my husband has a few coaster ideas for me that will take a bit longer to make). Personalized coasters take a bit longer since I have to prepare the photos, crop them, etc. With the notebooks it’s just a matter of coordinating colours of the countertop samples and the accents I add. More time is spent cutting the notebook paper and waiting for glue to dry!
What is your favorite product so far?
My favourite so far is my Virtual Room Review – decorating is what I love to do, and being able to do it at a low price so it’s accessible to everyone makes me happy. I’m also addicted to making coasters – I think the personalized ones are my favourite.
What makes your Etsy store different from others?
I think the combination of items – I have both handmade stuff for your home and virtual consultations.
